insight

Today's blog is important to me. I have been thinking about being perceptive. How do we all look at the world around us? How do each of our differing backgrounds help us or hinder us in our behavior as teachers in a professional capacity?

  1. I usually perceive things of a visual-spatial nature much more quickly than auditory cues. I may not hear some student's snide remark from the back row, but I can tell who the students treat as a social pariah by the relative distance they put between themselves.

I tend to miss momentary events, so students might slip a few infractions by me. This could make discipline tricky to administer fairly. On the other hand, I am pretty good about addressing recurring patterns.

  2. David,
Thanks for the comment. I was referring to personal background, like the way a person is raised or your background, though. From a behavioral perspective, do you gossip at work? Are you professional toward your students, including your nonverbals, what is your teaching style and how does it reflect your background and well as who you are today? That sort of thing.
