Today's Reflection

Today I learned that self disclosure can be used at times in one on one talks with students to relate if they are having trouble learning. I also learned that if a student isn't learning, maybe getting them to learn isn't enough. Maybe finding out why they are not learning is important and may be a facilitating factor in long term skill development.

  1. Precisely so. Though we refer to them primarily as "students," we must remember that they are more than that. Likewise, we must remember that we are more than teachers.

  2. Dave,
I don't know if I am 'more than a teacher' other than just being plain old human. And, being so, I want my fellow humans to get the most of out life. Self disclosure can go too far, they don't need to know my life story, but I want them to know sometimes what I have done or been through outside of the classroom, and maybe inside of the classroom as examples so that they realize I can relate to them....
and later, they may grab that line and I can reel in a concept or two from them, or even an entire theme......set of ideas....original work.....building something of their own creation....or even a breakdown analysis of a movie we watched in class....I call it "feeding it back to me." I would use self-disclosure in this way with a student: with a professional goal in mind. To learn first, and then teach....that's my mantra...Shannon
